Situated in Digbeth and within easy reach of Birmingham City Centre, SIFA Fireside has been central to homelessness provision in the city for over 40 years.
We’re seeking a handyperson to assist with maintenance tasks within the Support Centre. This volunteering role involves a variety of tasks, from minor repairs like putting up shelves and changing light bulbs, to more general maintenance jobs. The handyperson will be an asset to the charity, ensuring the building is safe, welcoming, and well-maintained.
Key Responsibilities
- General repairs, including fixing door handles, furniture, and minor plumbing issues. Basic painting and decorating to keep our spaces looking fresh and welcoming.
- Minor electrical work, such as changing light bulbs or securing loose fittings. Basic carpentry, such as putting up shelves or repairing damaged furniture. Identifying and reporting any larger maintenance issues to SIFA Fireside staff.
Skills & Qualities Required
- Knowledge of Health & Safety regs preferable but not essential.
- Basic DIY & Maintenance Skills – No professional qualifications required, just confidence in general handyman tasks.
- Problem-Solving Mindset – Ability to assess small maintenance issues and find practical solutions.
- Attention to Detail – Ensuring work is completed safely and to a good standard.
- Reliability & Independence – Ability to work alone or with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility – Happy to take on a variety of small jobs based on business needs.
Training & Development
- Full training on building safety and procedures will be provided.
Time Commitment
This role is ad-hoc, with flexible hours based on the volunteer’s availability. Volunteers can arrange their time to fit around their schedule. Any time given is greatly appreciated, whether it’s a few hours a month or more regularly.
